Brian Kim-Essay 3

My argument for capital punishment.

Recently, people can easily see many violent crime in news. Therefore, some people say that capital punishment should enforce again. However government is not enforcing it yet because it is a very controversial problem. In my opinion, capital punishment should be abolished. I'll tell you why.
First, government has responsibility to enlighten criminals. In Korea, criminals are sent to '교도소'(prison). It means 'criminals enlightening place'. Korean government made this name because they want to change criminals mind and heart. So if prisoners die because of the capital punishment, there are no chance to enlighten the criminals. So it against the government's criminal policy.
Second, there are no way to save people in misjudgement. Judging people is very hard so it has possibilities to sentence wrong. Capital punishment is no exception. What is worse, it cannot reverse the judgement even the dead men was innocent. So capital punishment has many risks to enforce it.
Third, government can abuse the capital punishment for political reason. In 1974 in Korea, some college students protested to military dictatorship, but the Korea Central Intelligence Agency arrested them and the court sentence the capital punishment. The sentence enforced a day after. But in 2002, it proved that the student's statement was fabricate by torture. Like this case, capital punishment has possibilities to abused by government.
Finally, capital punishment is inhumane for executioner. Capital punishment doesn't care about executioner. Most of the executioner do not want to kill criminals but they have to execute the law. Because of this, executioner can have indelible wounds in their heart. It is very inhumane treatment.
In summary, capital punishment do not enlighten criminals, cannot reverse the sentence, can be abused by government, and inhumane for executioner. In these reasons, I disagree about the capital punishment.

  1. I think that capital punishment should be shutdown also.
    Life is Good.
In that case, what should they be doing to punish others instead of initiating capital punish?

  2. Brian supported his idea with four reasons. First was that the true meaning of 교도소(prison in korean) is paradoxical compared to what is seen now. Second, there may be a chance in which the judge acutally misjudge the incident. Third, the government can abuse the execution with political matters. Lastly, the executioners themselves will carry on their memory of scars in their hearts.

Yeah, good supportings. Your essay is really persuasive. But haven't you ever thought of the other way? So my question is that- what if you were the one that was indirectly affected by the murderer? What would you think about the consequences that the criminal have to make if he or she killed one of you truly loved?

  3. Brian,

Very well thought out and good supporting statements. I have a question. Suppose a criminal in prison is released after his sentence and then commits the same crime again and again. Should there be a limit to how many crimes he will commit? What should his sentence be? How is life sentence in prison have more benefits than capital punishment?

  4. Brian I agree with you that capital punishment should be abolished!! I haven't thought of the feeling of the executioner, but I agree that it might be an indelible wound for them also.
What do you think is the best way to enlighten the criminals??

  5. Thank you for sharing!
I think this topic is one of the most serious topics. This has been a colossal dilemma for several years.

    Sorry, but
I'M GIVING YOU A REALLY HARD QUESTION. (HAHA)
In Korea, capital punishment has been an 'unofficial moratorium on executions' since it exists but not carried out to execution for more than ten years. In December, 2007, Amnesty International, the organization who campaign to end grave abuses of human rights, had declared South Korea as 'Abolitionist in Practice'.
So many people are claiming that we can outlaw capital punishment since there is no actual execution for a long time.
But still there is a dilemma. If we abolish it, there might be some criminals who commit crimes fearlessly. But if we doesn't, it would be abusing human rights. Statistical data shows this dilemma. Globally, only 9% of countries had completely abolished capital punishment. And 25% of countries are still called 'Abolitionists in Practice'. I want to know your opinion about this.

  6. I liked reading essay and I thought about your subject which I was not really interested in. I have a question. If a criminal has made a huge!!! murder or a crime that most of the people agree that the criminal chould be capital punishment, then instead of capital punishment, what would be the best way to punish the criminal?

  7. Wow.You wrote an essay with a good supportings. I was touched by your structure of a logic.
However I just checked out some grammar error in order to fill out the form we are given. You should be carful about the passive tense.
"should enforce -> should be enforced
    fabricate by -> fabricated by
possibilities to abused -> to be abused"

Well, my friend, I find a intersting argument about the death penarty in the web. I won't tell you the adress. (lol)

The abolinists say that the capital punishment is not justifiable because the law has the problem of priority. They argue that the principle of " eye for an eye, teeth for a teeth" can be aplied only when the rapists are raped and arsonit's house is burnt down.
But the people who agree with the death penalty says "Raping the rapist is only degrading oneself, therefore it will not prevent the rapist raping again. But excution allows to prevent the crime that can make another one's death, so it's far outweighting the disadvantages for it can save many people's life."
How do you think about this argument?

  8. Yes, I agree with your opinion. But I heard that capital punishment doesn't use in Korea. I have a question, do you know about commutation of in drink crime? In Korea, when person commit a crime. But, if he was drunken, his sentence may decrease. What do you think about this?
