Sieun: Essay3

Should we protect the environment or develop?

The world could seem like it is becoming a better place to live. Since it keeps developing and making new things, people could live easier or even happier. But, it is because they do not know exactly what is happening to the environment around us. People argue a lot rather they should develop more buildings or if they should protect. I argue that they should definitely protect the environment for the following reasons.

To start with, protecting the environment is needed since we have harmful poisonous and harmful particles in our air, water and soil. As people build new buildings and apartments, they cut down lots of trees and plants. Since we have very bad pollution these days, it is hard for us to have fresh air without trees and mountains. Now most developing countries or emerging economies face the similar problem. We find that there are poisonous and harmful particles in our air, water and soil.

In agricultural development period, we take environmental issues for granted because that was a time when people’s impact on earth was not big enough. When industry is developed, environmental cost was neglected. Trees were logged, water and soil were contaminated. Suddenly we find the fish in the river or lake dead. Over a period of ten or twenty years, our rivers even disappeared due to over use of water and climate change.

To solve the first problem, factories and business must take their social responsibilities. Whatever they produce, they must treat the water before they discharge. Also to prevent soil pollution, both farmers and industry need to take action. The farmers’ use of chemical fertilizers can cause pollution both to soil and water.

Second, not only the needs of fresh air and water, the animals are having no place to live. They cut down all the trees in the mountains and harm their home. This is why animals are disappearing. Animals are gifts from God and our job is to protect them and live with them, not break their territories.

In conclusion, I think that we should stop developing for ourselves but protect our environment.

  1. I like your topic and also your essay:)! I definitely agree with you! I think we should save the earth and stop harming them. Here's my question! As students like us, what can we do to protect the nature?

  3. Your essay topic, the environmental issues, is very common, but at the same time it's very important and interesting. However, what I'm feeling is that the length of your essay is not sufficient for effective communication. Also, the absence of enough supporting details makes an essay not logical.
But despite of these problems, your essay was good and really interesting. And since I have a lot of questions about this topic(haha), let me ask for your opinion about some of them.

I heard some creation scientists arguing that recent environmental issues are not our fault. They says that most of the causes of environmental problems are just coming from natural cycle and human causes, including what you've mentioned on your essay, are relatively small and even ignorable in proportion.

Recently, I've read a book about this and what it showed me as an evidence for this hypothesis was that human contribute less than 1% of global CO2 emissions, which is known as one of the major causes of greenhouse effect (in other word, global warming).

And also, some websites, including scientific papers, are showing me that most of the facts that environmentalists are showing us are 'lies'. For example, they says that polar bears are not actually dying and their population are increasing instead. And even there are researches showing me that the temperature of Arctic is cooling down, 1 degree Celsius dropped compare to 1940s.

How do you think about these theories? I'm not opposing your opinion and I'm also entirely agreeing with that we should stop developing and keep our nature. But I'm asking you these question because I'm very confused about this for few months. I really want your serious and logical answer. Thank You.

  4. I like your essay. Your topic is kind of related with mine. Do you think there is no way keeping environment + developing?

  5. I keep thinking about environment since I read some books when I was in elementary school. I think indiscreet destruction eventually came back to us.
Anyway, do you want to go back to clean past? Like Joseon Dynasty.

  6. Thank you for your essay. I enjoyed it.
I'm sharing same opinion with you that careless development caused harmful destruction of the nature.
I agree with Jaehyungs comment, your essay was good but I fell little bit sorry. Supporting details were not well-structured, and quite abstract.
However, What do you think about the taxation on carbone dioxide?
