Linda Kim: Essay 3

Is it right to tell the truth to the terminally ill patient or not?

Linda Kim

There are some patients who are given limited time. And doctors and patients' families experience inner conflict of what is right; to tell, or not to tell. The rule regulates to tell for the patients' right to know. But some say the terminally ill patient should not know the situation, claiming that the patient might be afraid after they find out they will die soon. But in my opinion, it is right to tell the truth to the terminally ill patient.

It is because the patient should prepare for the time leaving the world. And they would want to say good-bye to their family and friends. They also might want to do something special in their life even if it's just left a little. Also, some saying that the terminally ill patient should not know the situation, claiming that the patient might be afraid after they find out they will die soon.

First of all, the patients should prepare for the time leaving the world. The patients should know the time when they will die and prepare for the time. By knowing the time when they will die, they will experience and learn the specialty of the life.

Secondly, they might want to say good-by to their family and friends. Saying good-bye to the people around oneself before dying is one of the important step for one to do before passing away. And by knowing the truth, the terminally ill patients might be able to say good-bye to the people around them.

At the last, the patients might want to do something special in their life. The patients might have a dream even it's big or small. And they would love to accomplish the dream. If they find out about their terminally ill, they would try more to accomplish the dream.

To give the opposite to some saying that the terminally ill patient should not know the situation, claiming that the patient might be afraid after they find out they will die soon. I did a research And as I saw an research, I found out that the patient who heard when they will pass away could prepare for the death more comfortable, and even get a lot of help in spending rest of the life. But for the patients who didn't heard the date when they die, they suffered from the mental anguish by the increase of the fear of uncertain future.

To summarize, the patients should prepare for the time leaving the world. The patients might want to say good-by to their family and friends. The patients might want to do something special in their life. And for these three reasons, I think it is right to tell the truth to the terminally ill patient. Terminally ill patients should know their situation and do more things.

These days, there are lots of situation like this making us to be confused. But as we can see, the "truth" is the best. "Truth" might not be the best solution for every situation, but I agree that the "truth" works a big part of solving situations. Even now, some doctors can be suffering from inner conflict of to tell or not to tell the situation of terminally ill patient. And if I were that doctor, I would tell the patients their situation.

  1. Linda,

Very unique argument with great support and evidence of your opinion. What about a situation where someone is not healthy mentally and could do something to harm themselves if they are told? Also, what is right when family members request not to tell the patients, specifically if its a parent with a terminally ill child?

  2. I enjoyed your essay and I like your essay's structure! It was smooth and well-organized.
I have some questions. You mentioned that you found a research supporting your opinion that patient who heard when they will pass away could prepare for the death more comfortable. Is it a scientific paper? If then, where did you get that from?

  4. Linda, I enjoyed your good essay. :)
There was appropriate evidence for who is terminally sick and he or she's family each. Structure was well maden too.
I want to suppose one situation to ask my question.
Sometimes, in unique circumstance, some death-sentenced patients(in a condition that only doctor knows it) get completely recovered by inexplicable reasons. How do you think about the idea that sentencing uncurable disease is really making patients pass away?(In a matter of chance)

Sometimes I imagine what will I do if I have few months to live?
What will you do if you're a terminally ill patient?

  6. Linda is curious for telling the truth for terminally ill patient or not. Her opioion is yes. Because the patient should prepare for the time leaving the world.
The patient should arrungment the personal connections that he or she had.
Third the patient might want to do something special in there life.
But the opposite ar saying, it could be harmful to telling the truth to the patient.

  7. Fascinating essay. I think it is right and wise to tell the truth, as they say "Truth should be told".
Lets say if you had a one choice before facing death. What kind of special thing do you want to do if you had one chance?

  8. I liked those evidence you wrote in your essay and it made me think about the subject again:) I'm curious about this. What if a patient is really sick but the patient tries to think in the positive way, have a desire to get healthy soon and tries to live happy. Like in this kind of situation, if the doctor tells the patient the 'truth', won't he lose his hope, think in negative way and lose all the energy thinking that the patient would die anyway.. Will this be a good way telling the truth?
